A devastating highway crash in Texas has resulted in a harsh sentence for a woman responsible for transporting an illegal alien who lost his life. Raquel Delgado Chavez, 39, was sentenced to 16 years in federal prison on March 13, 2023 for her role in the fatal crash.

According to court documents, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper responded to a single-vehicle rollover crash in Lynn County on November 25, 2022. A Mexican citizen was found deceased at the scene, with a medical examiner determining the individual died after being ejected from the vehicle during the rollover accident.

Chavez was interviewed and admitted to calling a Mexican phone number to receive directions to a truck in El Paso. She claimed she did not know the passengers but was aware they were illegal aliens. Chavez was driving the truck when the vehicle flipped, and she fled the scene, citing fear as her reason for fleeing.

This investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, Texas Department of Public Safety (Highway Patrol and Texas Rangers), and Lynn County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Redd prosecuted the case.

Chavez pleaded guilty to transportation of an illegal alien resulting in death in July 2023. The harsh sentence handed down to Chavez serves as a reminder of the consequences of human trafficking and the devastating impact it can have on individuals and communities.
