In a shocking turn of events, Raymond Lilly, 41, an Augusta man, was sentenced to 6 years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm. This comes after he was encountered by Augusta police officers at Mill Park encampment in September 2023.
Lilly pleaded guilty on May 2, 2025 to possessing a firearm after previously being convicted of at least one felony offense. According to court records, Lilly admitted to not having a prescription for a bottle of pills found in his tent during the interaction with the officers.
The officers discovered a Smith & Wesson model M&P 15, .22 caliber rifle in Lilly’s tent. This is a significant offense, as Lilly had previous felony firearms convictions in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, which barred him from possessing firearms.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case in conjunction with the Augusta Police Department. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities.
