DENVER, CO – Rayzjaun Curry, 25, of Denver, is facing federal time after a jury convicted him Wednesday of possessing a firearm and ammunition despite being a convicted felon. The case, stemming from a routine traffic stop, highlights the persistent flow of illegal weapons onto Denver streets and the risks posed to public safety.
According to trial evidence, Denver Police officers with the District 2 Impact Team pulled Curry over on April 22, 2022, after spotting an expired license plate in the Park Hill neighborhood. As officers approached the vehicle, Curry was observed reaching toward the passenger seat. A search revealed a backpack containing a loaded Ruger 9mm handgun – 15 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber. Adding a disturbing layer to the situation, Curry’s 6-year-old daughter was a passenger in the backseat.
Prosecutors successfully argued that Curry’s prior felony conviction legally barred him from possessing any firearms or ammunition. The three-day trial, overseen by U.S. District Court Judge Raymond P. Moore, clearly established Curry’s prohibited status, leading the jury to return a guilty verdict on November 9, 2022. This isn’t just about a gun; it’s about a repeat offender knowingly breaking the law and potentially endangering lives.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Denver Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brian Dunn and Celeste Rangel handled the prosecution, building a solid case based on the physical evidence and Curry’s criminal history. The ATF has been increasingly active in Denver, working alongside local law enforcement to stem the tide of illegal firearms.
Federal officials framed the case as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened PSN strategy in May 2021, emphasizing community trust, violence prevention, and targeted enforcement. Critics, however, argue that such programs often fail to address the root causes of crime.
Curry is scheduled to be sentenced on February 13, 2023. The case number is 22-cr-147. While the sentencing guidelines remain undisclosed, a significant prison term is likely given the nature of the offense and Curry’s criminal background. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing.
