Redding’s Eric Michael Smith, a 41-year-old serial arsonist, has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison for his destructive campaign of fires in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced the sentence, which also includes an order for Smith to pay $19,071 in restitution to the U.S. Forest Service.
Smith’s spree of fire-setting, documented from June 2019 through July 2020, resulted in no fewer than 11 fires on national forest land. He also confessed to abandoning at least 11 campfires during this period, posing a significant risk to public safety and the natural environment.
The arsonist utilized discreet ignition sources such as cigarette lighters and handheld torches, setting wildfires in remote sections of the forest. His timing was particularly malicious, with many fires occurring during early morning hours, complicating detection and firefighting efforts. In one instance, a fire Smith set in July 2020 came alarmingly close to Interstate 5 near Turntable Bay Road, prompting authorities to close part of the highway to protect properties from the inferno.
Smith’s capture followed a meticulous investigation by law enforcement agents who fitted his vehicle with a tracking device and monitored his movements for days before his arrest in late July 2020. The U.S. Forest Service and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spearheaded this case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sam Stefanki was responsible for prosecuting Smith. This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by arsonists and the thoroughness with which law enforcement can bring these criminals to justice.
