BALTIMORE, MD – Michael Gene Reed, 40, of Dundalk, Maryland, will spend the next 12 years in federal prison after being sentenced today for possessing child pornography and flagrantly violating the terms of his supervised release stemming from a previous federal sex offense conviction. U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake handed down the sentence, followed by a lifetime of supervised release – a clear message that predators will be held accountable.
The case, a grim reminder of the ongoing epidemic of child sexual exploitation, was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert K. Hur, alongside Acting Special Agent in Charge Cardell T. Morant of ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Acting Special Agent in Charge Jennifer L. Moore of the FBI Baltimore Field Office, Baltimore County Police Chief Terrence B. Sheridan, and Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger. The collaborative effort underscores the dedication of multiple agencies to protecting the most vulnerable.
According to court documents, Reed’s descent into criminality isn’t a recent phenomenon. In 2009, he was convicted in the District of Columbia of traveling with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and possessing child pornography, receiving a 90-month prison sentence and 15 years of supervised release. Released in December 2014, Reed almost immediately began to flout the conditions of his freedom. He deliberately concealed his true residence, living with his girlfriend and her minor daughter at a rowhome three miles from the address he provided to the Maryland Sex Offender Registry.
But the deceit didn’t stop there. Reed actively sought out depraved content online, participating in anonymous chatrooms under aliases like “kinkfan” and the chillingly explicit “pedoperv.” On February 14 and November 17, 2017, he shared images of sexually suggestive behavior involving minor girls and, even more disturbingly, images depicting the sexual abuse of a prepubescent girl. This wasn’t passive viewing; Reed was an active participant in distributing this horrific material.
A January 11, 2018 search warrant executed at the girlfriend’s rowhome uncovered evidence confirming Reed’s use of a work cellphone for these illicit activities. He admitted to deliberately hiding his new address to prevent his girlfriend’s daughter and her father from learning about his past. Authorities also discovered additional images documenting the sexual abuse of prepubescent minors on his devices. Reed’s attempt to rebuild a life while concealing his dangerous tendencies has failed spectacularly.
This case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative aimed at combating child sexual exploitation. As Hur stated, the goal is to locate, apprehend, and prosecute those who prey on children, and to rescue victims. Resources and internet safety education are available at www.justice.gov/psc. He will also be required to re-register as a sex offender upon his release, a constant reminder of his crimes.
