Fort Washakie Man Sentenced for Assault by Strangulation

A gruesome assault in Fort Washakie, Wyoming, has resulted in a 37-year-old local man being sentenced to 24 months in prison, according to court documents.

On May 10, 2022, Reeland Leonard-Hiwalker, A/K/A Reeland Ferris, strangled the victim with his hands around the victim’s neck multiple times, leaving the victim unconscious on one occasion.

The assault by strangulation case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with assistance from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Assistant United States Attorney Kerry J. Jacobson prosecuted the case.

On October 19, 2022, United States District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson handed down the sentence of 24 months’ imprisonment with three years of supervised release. Leonard-Hiwalker was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment.

In a statement, Acting United States Attorney Nicholas Vassallo confirmed the sentence.

Leonard-Hiwalker was sentenced in connection with a May 10, 2022, assault in Fort Washakie, Wyoming.
