A registered sex offender from Missouri has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for crossing state lines to engage in sex with a minor. Joshua T. Wilson, 23, of Monroe County, Missouri, pleaded guilty to transporting a minor across state lines to engage in sexual activity.
According to federal prosecutors, Wilson met a 16-year-old girl in the spring of 2022 and began interacting with her on a daily basis via online apps. The two engaged in sexual conversations and exchanged explicit images. Wilson also met the teen for sex and took her to Kansas, where he engaged in unlawful sexual activity with her.
Wilson is a registered sex offender, and the charge against him carries a mandatory prison term of 10 years, with a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison. The FBI and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Dianna Edwards prosecuting the case.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. This initiative marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
Wilson’s guilty plea comes as a major blow to those who would seek to exploit and harm vulnerable children. “The justice department will continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of our children, and we will not tolerate the exploitation and abuse of minors,” said a spokesperson for the DOJ.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online predators and the importance of parents and guardians being vigilant in monitoring their children’s online activity. As the nation continues to grapple with the issue of child sexual exploitation, it is more important than ever that we come together to support victims, hold perpetrators accountable, and prevent further harm.
