Jeremy Reichberg, NYPD Bribery Scheme, New York 2023

JEREMY REICHBERG, the self-proclaimed ‘NYPD Liaison’, was sentenced today to 48 months in prison for orchestrating a brazen bribery scheme that ensnared top New York City Police Department officials.

United States Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman announced the sentence, which comes after Reichberg’s conviction on conspiracy, honest services fraud, and bribery charges following a two-month trial. U.S. District Judge Gregory H. Woods imposed the stiff penalty.

Berman minced no words in describing the scheme: ‘For years, Jeremy Reichberg forged corrupt relationships with law enforcement through a stream of illegal payments and financial benefits, eroding public confidence in an impartial NYPD.’

The scheme, which spanned from 2008 to 2015, involved Reichberg and his co-conspirator, Jona Rechnitz, providing high-level officers with gifts such as travel, home improvements, and premium tickets. In return, they expected favors like police escorts, influence in investigations, and the issuance of gun permits.

According to the Superseding Indictment, Reichberg’s actions corrupted several NYPD officials, including the Chief of Department and a commanding officer of an Upper East Side precinct. The sentence imposed by Judge Woods underscores the severity of the offense: ‘This case was about much more than dollars and cents. It is important that the public be able to trust that its public officials act without fear or favor.’

The night before his arrest, Reichberg attempted to obstruct justice by asking his brother to ‘hold’ business cards and cell phones containing sensitive communications with police officers.
