A 35-year-old Foley man has been sentenced to five years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Remonto Maurice Johnson, a convicted felon with a history of assault and drug offenses, was arrested by Foley police on December 22, 2020, on charges related to a domestic-violence incident.
According to court documents, the previous day, police were investigating a shooting in a residential area of Foley when they recovered a Glock .40-caliber pistol from a driveway on South Pecan Street. Johnson had dropped the pistol while fleeing the area during the shooting.
During the shooting, two individuals fired at Johnson in retaliation for the prior domestic-violence incident. Johnson admitted in his guilty plea that he possessed the Glock pistol, that he was a convicted felon, and that he knew he was prohibited from possessing firearms.
United States District Court Judge Terry F. Moorer ordered Johnson to serve a three-year term of supervised release upon his release from prison. As part of his release, Johnson will undergo testing and treatment for substance abuse. Johnson will also be required to pay $100 in special assessments.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Foley Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Roller prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello made the announcement.
Johnson’s case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violating gun laws. As a convicted felon, Johnson knew he was prohibited from possessing firearms, yet he chose to arm himself.
