Renee Jarvis, Tax Scheme, New York 2009

Renee Jarvis, a 51-year-old Canadian citizen, pleaded guilty to conspiring with others to defraud the United States and to steal government funds in a brazen tax scheme.

The crime, which took place in Rochester, New York, involved Jarvis filing a false U.S. Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return, claiming a refund of $404,120.00. She then opened a bank account in the area, deposited a U.S. Treasury check, and withdrew the funds, in part, to pay a co-conspirator for preparing the false documents.

The plea is the culmination of an investigation by Special Agents of the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge Shantelle Kitchen.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Marisa J. Miller and Tax Division Trial Attorney Jeffrey A. McLellan are handling the case. They stated that Jarvis was charged, along with six others, with filing false tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service.

Jarvis faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both. Sentencing is scheduled for November 12th, at 3:00 p.m. before Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr.
