ORLANDO, FL – Pedro Lucas-Cruz, 31, a citizen of Mexico, is headed back to federal prison after receiving a 30-month sentence for the federal offense of illegal reentry by a deported alien. U.S. District Judge Gregory A. Presnell handed down the sentence today, marking the latest chapter in a pattern of disregard for U.S. immigration law and a history of violence.
Lucas-Cruz initially pled guilty to the charge on June 30, 2025, but this wasn’t his first brush with the law – or deportation. Court records reveal a troubling past, including a conviction for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and felony battery dating back to February 12, 2015. Following that conviction, he was deported from the United States on September 21, 2017.
But Lucas-Cruz didn’t stay away. He illegally reentered the country and was subsequently convicted of illegal reentry on March 11, 2021. Again, he was deported, this time on February 4, 2022. Apparently undeterred, Lucas-Cruz once more defied the law, illegally crossing the border again and surfacing in the Middle District of Florida on January 6, 2025, triggering his latest arrest.
This isn’t a simple immigration violation; it’s a clear pattern of behavior by a repeat offender who has demonstrated a willingness to ignore the consequences of his actions. The repeated deportations and reentries raise serious questions about border security and the effectiveness of current enforcement measures. The Grimy Times will continue to investigate this case and others like it.
The investigation into Lucas-Cruz’s illegal reentry was conducted by dedicated agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick M. Flanigan, who successfully argued for a significant sentence to reflect the seriousness of the offense and Lucas-Cruz’s criminal history.
Lucas-Cruz’s 30-month sentence serves as a stark warning to others contemplating similar actions: repeatedly violating U.S. immigration laws carries significant federal penalties. The Grimy Times will continue to track this case and provide updates as they become available. This is just the latest example of the ongoing struggle to secure the border and hold accountable those who repeatedly break the law.
