BEAUMONT, TX – Another day, another border crosser facing the music. Jose De Jesus Rocha-Perez, 48, a national of Mexico, is headed back to a cell after being sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for the federal immigration violation of illegal reentry. The sentence was handed down today by U.S. District Judge Marcia Crone in the Eastern District of Texas, a clear message that repeatedly violating U.S. immigration law carries serious consequences.
Rocha-Perez initially landed in trouble in September 2018, not for a violent act, but for public intoxication. A routine check while in the Jefferson County Jail exposed his illegal status. A deportation officer discovered Rocha-Perez wasn’t just here illegally – he was a repeat offender with a history of flouting U.S. immigration laws. He readily admitted to being a Mexican citizen unlawfully present in the United States.
But the public intoxication charge was just the tip of the iceberg. Digging deeper, investigators uncovered a rap sheet riddled with felony convictions. Rocha-Perez had previously been convicted of illegal entry into the United States, illegal reentry, larceny, burglary, and assault. This wasn’t a first-time mistake; it was a pattern of disregard for the law. And the record shows he’d already been deported from the United States a staggering four times. Each deportation apparently meant nothing to him.
U.S. Attorney Joseph D. Brown made it clear this case wasn’t about a simple border crossing. It was about a deliberate and repeated defiance of federal law. “This sentence reflects the seriousness of repeated immigration violations, especially by individuals with a history of criminal activity,” Brown stated. The prosecution successfully argued that Rocha-Perez posed an ongoing risk to public safety and national security.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Department of Homeland Security Enforcement and Removal Operations (DHS-ERO) and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Randall L. Fluke skillfully prosecuted the case, presenting the evidence that led to the conviction and subsequent sentencing. This collaborative approach highlights the commitment of federal and local agencies to address illegal immigration and its associated criminal activity.
Don’t expect to see Rocha-Perez back on the streets of Beaumont anytime soon. Following his completion of the 27-month federal sentence, he will be deported from the United States – again.
