TOLEDO, Ohio – The Northern District of Ohio is seeing a renewed push in immigration enforcement, with three individuals recently sentenced to time served for the federal crime of illegal reentry. These aren’t isolated incidents; they represent a pattern of disregard for U.S. immigration law, according to federal prosecutors. Each man had been previously deported, only to reappear within the state’s borders.
Gonzalo Diaz-Resendiz, 29, a citizen of Mexico, received his sentence from U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey J. Helmick after pleading guilty to violating Title 8 U.S. Code 1326 – illegal reentry. Diaz-Resendiz was last removed from the United States on September 6, 2013, yet was found in Putnam County, near Ottawa, Ohio. He remains detained while awaiting deportation. The sentence, while ‘time served,’ underscores the revolving door problem of illegal reentry, critics say.
The same fate befell Edin Oneil Carrillos-Rodriguez, 36, of Honduras. Carrillos-Rodriguez, with a deportation history stretching back to December 11, 2014, was discovered in Sandusky County, near Clyde, Ohio. Like Diaz-Resendiz, he pleaded guilty to illegal reentry and received a time-served sentence, remaining in custody pending deportation. Raul Samano-Fuerte, 49, a Mexican citizen with an even more extensive removal history – four prior deportations, the most recent on March 10, 2009 – also received the same sentence after being found in Huron County, near Norwalk, Ohio.
The enforcement isn’t limited to sentencing already-caught individuals. A federal grand jury has also returned an indictment against Jaime Sanchez-Tlehuactle, 43, also a citizen of Mexico. Sanchez-Tlehuactle is charged with illegal reentry, having been previously removed on April 21, 2021. He was located in Wood County, Bowling Green, Ohio. As with all indictments, Sanchez-Tlehuactle is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
These investigations were spearheaded by the U.S. Border Patrol-Sandusky Bay Station, demonstrating a focused effort on the Ohio region. Assistant United States Attorneys Gene Crawford, Matthew Simko, and Ava Rotell Dustin are prosecuting the cases for the Northern District of Ohio. The Department of Justice frames these actions as part of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative targeting illegal immigration, cartels, and transnational criminal organizations.
While officials tout Operation Take Back America as a means to protect communities, critics argue that the focus on individual reentry cases fails to address the root causes driving illegal immigration. The cases highlight a constant strain on the federal system, with repeat offenders cycling through deportation and re-entry, demanding significant resources. The Grimy Times will continue to follow these cases and report on the larger implications of federal immigration policy in Ohio and beyond.
