CINCINNATI – The grimy details of a romance fraud conspiracy have come to light as Richard Opoku Agyemang, 41, faces serious federal charges for his role in laundering over $2 million. Agyemang, a resident of Cincinnati, has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to the heinous act of money laundering.
The scam involved a ring of individuals who used stolen photographs and虚假信息 on dating websites to prey on unsuspecting victims. The fraudulent profiles were designed to establish online romantic relationships with these vulnerable souls. Tricked into believing they were supporting their newfound online partners, victims were coerced into sending funds for so-called medical expenses.
Court documents reveal that Agyemang was the recipient of over $2 million, acquired through money transfers and check deposits into his controlled accounts. The fraudulent proceeds were transferred in 2022, with Agyemang being charged federally in April 2024. His plea agreement recommends a harsh sentence of up to 41 months in prison.
The guilty plea was entered on September 17 before U.S. District Judge Matthew W. McFarland. Dominick S. Gerace II, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, and Lesley Allison, Inspector in Charge, U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), Pittsburgh Division, were present to announce the charges against Agyemang.
Assistant United States Attorneys Julie D. Garcia and Ebunoluwa A. Taiwo are representing the United States in this case, which has sent a chilling message about the dangers of online romance scams. The case serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some individuals will go to exploit the trust of others for financial gain.
“This conviction is a testament to our commitment to hold those who engage in financial crimes accountable,” said Gerace II. “We will continue to work tirelessly to protect the public from these types of schemes.”
