Carl P. Lewis, Robbery of Mail, Money or other Property of the United States, Ohio 2024

CLEVELAND – A brazen daylight robbery of a federal informant has landed a Cuyahoga County man in federal prison for a decade. Carl P. Lewis, 28, of Cleveland, was sentenced to 120 months (10 years) by U.S. District Judge Pamela A. Barker after admitting to a calculated and violent crime.

Lewis pleaded guilty in May to three serious federal charges: Robbery of Mail, Money or other Property of the United States; Using or Carrying, and Brandishing a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence; and being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm – a repeat offense considering previous robbery convictions in 2016. The sentence also includes five years of supervised release following his imprisonment.

The October 2024 incident began with Lewis engaging in text message negotiations with a confidential informant working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). The subject: the sale of firearms. A meeting was arranged, a pre-determined location chosen, and $2,500 in cash was promised for the weapons. But the deal quickly devolved into a dangerous confrontation.

Court documents detail how Lewis, after receiving the informant’s request to inspect the firearms before payment, became agitated and threatened violence. As a struggle ensued over control of the guns, a second individual emerged from the residence, brandishing a pistol equipped with a laser sight and directly threatening the informant. Lewis then forcibly stole the $2,500 from the victim. The entire ordeal was captured on video, providing damning evidence for prosecutors.

Following the robbery, Lewis was arrested on a federal criminal complaint. A search revealed he was in possession of a rifle and two pistols, further cementing the case against him. The ATF investigation quickly pieced together the events, revealing a calculated attempt to defraud and violently rob a law enforcement source.

Assistant United States Attorney Kelly L. Galvin prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and a substantial prison sentence. This case serves as a stark warning: interfering with federal investigations and resorting to violence will be met with the full force of the law.
