Rep’s Aide Stole $19,000 from Taxpayers
A former U.S. House of Representatives employee has been caught red-handed in a brazen scheme to embezzle over $19,000 from taxpayers. Brian Prokes, a 28-year-old former office manager, pleaded guilty to theft of government property in a stunning admission of guilt.
According to court documents, Prokes worked as the office manager for a U.S. Congressman between February 2012 and March 2013. His responsibilities included transmitting salary and bonus information to the House of Representatives’ Office of Payroll and Benefits. However, Prokes had other plans.
Between April 2012 and March 2013, Prokes submitted unauthorized paperwork to the Office of Payroll and Benefits to pay himself a larger salary and bonus than he had been approved to receive. The excess salary payments and unauthorized travel expenses amounted to a whopping $19,000.
The scheme was uncovered by the FBI, which investigated the case. The prosecution, led by Trial Attorneys Kevin O. Driscoll and Sean F. Mulryne of the Criminal Division’s Public Integrity Section, will now move forward to ensure Prokes faces the full force of the law.
Prokes, of Atlanta, Georgia, is scheduled to be sentenced on October 14, 2014, before U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras in the District of Columbia. The court will now decide the fate of the disgraced former aide.
The guilty plea marks a significant victory for taxpayers, who will now be reimbursed for the stolen funds. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability in government and the consequences of corruption.
