Abilene Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Federal Prison for Possessing Child Pornography
LUBBOCK, Texas — In a shocking turn of events, Reymundo Alejandro Sanchez, a 21-year-old Abilene resident, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for possessing child pornography.
According to court documents, Sanchez used his cell phone to communicate with several individuals, including minors, through various mobile applications and social media platforms.
Sanchez engaged in sexually explicit conversations with many of these individuals, often exchanging explicit images and videos. One such instance involved a female minor under the age of 18, who was involved in sexually explicit conduct, as depicted in a video Sanchez received on April 30, 2014.
The case against Sanchez was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by U.S. Attorney’s Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children and identify and rescue victims.
The Abilene Police Department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven M. Sucsy prosecuting.
Sanchez’s pretrial release was revoked earlier this month when the court found that he had violated conditions of his release. The 10-year prison sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Sam R. Cummings is a significant blow to Sanchez and serves as a stark reminder of the severity of child pornography charges.
As part of his sentence, Sanchez will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison. The court’s decision to revoke Sanchez’s pretrial release and impose a lengthy prison sentence sends a strong message that child exploitation will not be tolerated in the Northern District of Texas.
