Rhode Island Man Pleads Guilty to Gas Station Murder
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a shocking turn of events, 35-year-old Jason W. Pleau will plead guilty as charged in the robbery and murder of Woonsocket gas station manager David Main.
According to a signed Plea Agreement filed in U.S. District Court in Providence, Pleau will admit to the crime, which occurred on September 20, 2010. Main was shot as he attempted to enter a Woonsocket bank to deposit receipts belonging to the gas station.
Pleau will plead guilty to conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery; Hobbs Act robbery; and carrying, using, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a federal crime of violence, death resulting.
As required by the United States Attorneys’ Manual, the Attorney General has approved the filing of a Plea Agreement in this matter and the withdrawal of the Notice of Intent to Seek a Sentence of Death against the defendant.
It is worth noting that an indictment is merely an allegation and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Pleau’s guilty plea is a significant development in this case, and it is expected that he will face severe penalties for his role in Main’s murder.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Rhode Island has confirmed that Pleau will plead guilty as charged by way of an indictment returned on December 14, 2010.
