TAMPA, FL – Ricardo Fermin Sune-Giron, 34, is headed to federal prison for 14 years after admitting to running a massive gun trafficking operation that flooded the Caribbean with illegal firearms. U.S. District Judge Virginia M. Hernandez Covington handed down the sentence today, along with an order for Sune-Giron to forfeit all weapons and ammunition seized from his residence. The Guatemalan national, who was living in the U.S. illegally under a false identity, pleaded guilty on December 11, 2024, to charges including conspiracy to traffic in firearms, gun trafficking, dealing in firearms without a license, and possessing firearms as an illegal alien.
Federal prosecutors detailed a sophisticated scheme spanning from 2023 to April 2024. Sune-Giron recruited “straw purchasers” across Florida to buy firearms – including Glocks, rifles, and even AK-47s – from licensed dealers. These weapons weren’t intended for lawful ownership within the U.S. Instead, Sune-Giron and his network smuggled them overseas, primarily to the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The scale of the operation is staggering: over 1,000 firearms were trafficked in just over a year, many of which have since turned up at crime scenes, fueling violence in already unstable regions.
The bust came on April 18, 2024, when agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) simultaneously raided three residences in the Orlando area, including Sune-Giron’s. The search uncovered a disturbing arsenal: approximately 57 firearms, 30 empty gun boxes, roughly $16,000 in cash, and a substantial amount of ammunition. Investigators also found money counters, suggesting a well-organized and lucrative operation.
The fact that Sune-Giron was in the country illegally under an assumed name only compounded the severity of the crime. He exploited vulnerabilities in the system to facilitate the flow of weapons with potentially deadly consequences. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Diego F. Novaes and Noah P. Dorman successfully prosecuted the case, highlighting the government’s commitment to disrupting these dangerous networks.
This case is being touted as a victory for “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative framed as a crackdown on illegal immigration, cartels, and transnational criminal organizations. While the DOJ emphasizes its focus on border security and eliminating criminal groups, critics point to the operation’s broad scope and potentially problematic framing of immigration as inherently linked to criminal activity.
Regardless of the political rhetoric, the conviction of Ricardo Fermin Sune-Giron sends a clear message: those who profit from illegally trafficking firearms and endangering communities will face serious consequences. The 14-year sentence, combined with the forfeiture of assets, represents a significant blow to Sune-Giron’s operation and a warning to others involved in similar criminal enterprises. The ATF and HSI continue to investigate potential co-conspirators and trace the flow of these illegally trafficked weapons.
