Richard Arens, II, a 38-year-old Toledo man, has been charged with a serious crime that has left many in the community stunned. According to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Arens is accused of stealing government property worth $93,373.
Between December 2007 and August 2013, Arens withdrew the money for his personal benefit from the bank account of his deceased mother. The Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General investigated the case, and Assistant United States Attorney Ava Dustin is handling the prosecution.
The defendant’s sentence will be determined by the Court after reviewing factors unique to this case, including his prior criminal record, if any, his role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation. If convicted, the defendant’s sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum and in most cases, it will be less than the maximum.
An information is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The investigation into Arens’ actions is ongoing, and the community is left to wonder how someone could engage in such a blatant disregard for the law. As the case moves forward, one thing is certain: justice will be served.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity in all aspects of life. It also highlights the need for vigilance and accountability in the face of financial crimes.
The Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General and Assistant United States Attorney Ava Dustin are to be commended for their tireless efforts in bringing this case to light. Their dedication to upholding the law and protecting the public’s trust is a testament to the importance of their work.
