A Monroeville, Pa., business owner has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for failing to pay employee withholding taxes to the IRS. Richard D. Edwards, 55, was sentenced by Senior United States District Judge Gustave Diamond.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Edwards failed to account for and pay over withholding taxes for various employees in his business, Custom Patio Rooms. This deliberate failure to pay taxes occurred over a period of more than two years, despite warnings from an accountant and an attorney.
Judge Diamond noted that Edwards had over 300 contacts with the IRS, urging him to properly report and pay his taxes during the time period in question. Despite these warnings, Edwards continued to fail to pay withholding taxes, leading to his conviction and sentencing.
In addition to the 18 months in prison, Edwards was also sentenced to three years of supervised release. He was ordered to pay all back taxes, penalties, and interest that were due and owing. The sentence is a result of an investigation led by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Special Agents.
U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton commended the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Special Agents for their work on the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Edwards. The case highlights the importance of complying with tax laws and the consequences of failing to do so.
The sentencing of Richard D. Edwards serves as a reminder to business owners of the importance of fulfilling their tax obligations. The IRS and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work together to prosecute those who fail to comply with tax laws, ensuring that all businesses operate on a level playing field.
The investigation and prosecution of tax evasion cases like that of Richard D. Edwards demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combating financial crimes. The public can be assured that those who engage in such activities will be held accountable and face the consequences of their actions.
