Richard Dewayne Jiles, Bank Robbery, Mississippi 2020

A brazen bank robbery in Jackson, Mississippi, left a trail of destruction and fear, but ultimately led to the downfall of the perpetrator.

Richard Dewayne Jiles, 42, robbed the Trustmark Bank on Medgar Evers Boulevard in Jackson on December 3, 2020. Jiles entered the bank and handed the teller a note stating that she would die if she did not give him $5,000.

Despite the menacing threat, the teller remained calm and handed over $4,240 in U.S. currency. Jiles left the bank with the stolen cash, but his joy was short-lived.

Law enforcement received tips and witness statements from Crimestoppers that led them to Jiles. He was arrested in Rankin County after crashing into another vehicle.

Jiles was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 9, 2021, and he pled guilty on June 3, 2021. On October 5, 2021, Jiles was sentenced to 47 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $4,240 in restitution.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Wansley prosecuted the case, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Jackson Police Department leading the investigation.

The case was prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, a proven strategy to reduce violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify and address the most pressing violent crime problems in the community.
