Richard Sanchez, Transporting Undocumented Migrants, Texas 2017

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — A San Antonio man has been locked up for smuggling undocumented migrants in the cramped, airless confines of a pickup truck’s tool box. Richard Sanchez, 34, pleaded guilty Nov. 7, 2017, to transporting illegal aliens, and today was handed a 21-month federal prison sentence by U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera.

The arrest came on October 10, 2017, when law enforcement pulled over the vehicle Sanchez was driving near Raymondville, a known corridor for human smuggling operations. After obtaining consent, officers pried open the truck’s rear tool box — and found two people inside: an undocumented man from Mexico and another from Guatemala. Both were dehydrated and disoriented, trapped with no way to escape.

Investigators revealed the toolbox had been latched from the outside, sealing the migrants in like cargo. A ladder leaned over the compartment, blocking any chance of emergency exit. Temperatures in South Texas routinely soar past 90 degrees — making the metal box a potential death trap. Prosecutors called the conditions inhumane and reckless.

Sanchez admitted to accepting payment for the smuggling run, though exact figures were not disclosed in court. His actions fall under federal charges of illegal transportation of aliens, a felony that carries stiff penalties when lives are endangered. The 34-year-old now faces immediate incarceration followed by one year of supervised release upon completion of his sentence.

Customs and Border Protection agents and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers led the investigation, working in tandem to dismantle the smuggling attempt. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose A. Esquivel Jr. prosecuted the case, emphasizing the danger posed by such reckless human smuggling tactics.

Sanchez remains in federal custody awaiting transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. Authorities warn that smuggling operations like this continue to exploit vulnerable migrants while endangering public safety across South Texas.
