SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – A local church usher has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for preying on a 14-year-old girl with explicit images and messages, Grimy Times has learned.
Marcos Rivera-Ramos, 156 months in prison and 10 years of supervised release for sexual enticement of a minor, was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Francisco A. Besosa. The punishment comes after Rivera-Ramos pleaded guilty to enticement of a minor via Snapchat and WhatsApp.
The investigation began when the victim’s parents reported receiving disturbing images on their daughter’s Apple iPhone. A group chat that started as innocent communication with church members turned into a private and explicit exchange between Rivera-Ramos and the victim.
Assistant United States Attorney Ginette Milanes prosecuted the case, uncovering evidence of a year-long conversation that started on Snapchat and moved to WhatsApp, where Rivera-Ramos asked the 14-year-old girl to send explicit images and videos of herself.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation into Rivera-Ramos’ actions, exposing the chilling details of his enticement of the minor. Rivera-Ramos had known the victim for approximately four years, and had even worked with her family at their church.
The case raises alarming questions about the ease with which predators can use social media to target and exploit vulnerable victims. Grimy Times will continue to investigate and provide updates on this and similar cases.
Rivera-Ramos’ sentence is a stark reminder of the severity of child exploitation crimes, and the need for increased vigilance and reporting by the public.
