Crime: Carjacking in Spring Lake

A chilling carjacking incident shook the community in Spring Lake, North Carolina, leaving a victim shaken and traumatized.

According to investigators, 19-year-old Robaenon Trequan Alexis, a resident of Spring Lake, along with another individual, approached a woman as she was exiting her vehicle on June 26, 2015.

The duo posed as strangers in need of a ride to jump-start a car, but their true intentions were far from innocent.

Once inside the vehicle, Alexis pointed a sawed-off firearm at the victim, threatening to kill her if she didn’t exit the car immediately. The victim, fearing for her life, complied, and was left stranded on the side of the road.

Alexis and his accomplice were later apprehended by local authorities in Greensboro, where they were found asleep in the victim’s car.

The case drew the attention of the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), who worked closely with the Granville County Sheriff’s Office, the Spring Lake and Greensboro Police Departments to bring Alexis to justice.

Assistant United States Attorney William M. Gilmore represented the United States in the case.

Alexis was indicted on various charges, including Carjacking and Aiding and Abetting, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He pleaded guilty on May 9, 2016.

On [date], Senior United States District Judge Malcolm J. Howard sentenced Alexis to 15 years in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release.
