An Overland Park man has admitted to amassing one of the largest known personal collections of child pornography in recent Kansas federal cases, with 44,000 illicit images and 500 videos found on his devices. Robert A. Weick, 32, pleaded guilty to one count of distributing child pornography in U.S. District Court today, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.
The investigation began when an FBI task force officer, using a file-sharing network, downloaded child sexual abuse material directly from Weick’s computer. The agency traced the digital footprint to his residence in Overland Park, Kan., leading to a targeted search warrant executed at his home. What they found was a sprawling digital archive of exploitation, with files systematically stored and accessible across peer-to-peer networks.
During the search, federal agents seized electronic devices containing approximately 44,000 images and 500 videos depicting child pornography. Investigators confirmed that Weick not only hoarded the material but actively shared it with other users online, enabling the further spread of abusive content. The nature and volume of the files indicate prolonged and deliberate participation in a predatory underground network.
Weick’s guilty plea marks the culmination of a focused federal probe into digital child exploitation. Authorities stress that every image represents a real child victim, often enduring lifelong trauma. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has helped identify some of the victims, leading to the agreement on restitution.
Under a recommended sentencing agreement, both prosecution and defense will urge the court to impose 100 months in federal prison and require Weick to pay $28,000 in restitution to identified victims. Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 3. If the court accepts the recommendation, Weick will also face mandatory registration as a sex offender for life.
U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister credited the FBI and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kim Flannigan for their relentless pursuit of justice in the case. “This is not a victimless crime,” McAllister said. “Each download fuels an industry of abuse. Weick’s actions have consequences that echo far beyond his hard drive.”
