Williamsport Man Sentenced To 15 Years Imprisonment For Being A Felon In Possession Of A Firearm
A Williamsport man has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars for violating federal firearms laws. Robert Cormier, 32, was sentenced yesterday by Chief United States District Court Judge Christopher C. Conner to serve 180 months’ imprisonment for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The charges against Cormier stem from a shooting incident outside the 5th Avenue Tavern in Williamsport in February 2015. According to court documents, Cormier was apprehended with a 9mm Taurus semiautomatic pistol after the shooting. At the time of his arrest, Cormier was prohibited from possessing firearms due to his status as a convicted felon.
Cormier pleaded guilty to the charges in March 2016 and was sentenced under the Armed Career Criminal Act, which provides for enhanced penalties for individuals previously convicted of three or more drug felonies or violent crimes. The act carries a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison.
The investigation that led to Cormier’s arrest was conducted by the Williamsport Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. Assistant United States Attorney Geoffrey W. MacArthur prosecuted the case.
The case was brought as part of the Violent Crime Reduction Partnership (VCRP), a district-wide initiative to combat the spread of violent crime in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. The VCRP is led by the United States Attorney’s Office and consists of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies that work together to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who commit violent crimes with firearms.
Cormier’s sentence is the result of his status as a convicted felon and the enhanced penalties provided for under the Armed Career Criminal Act. The 15-year prison sentence is designed to reflect the severity of Cormier’s crimes and the public safety risks associated with his possession of a firearm.
