Robert Fehring, a 30-year-old resident of Long Island, has been put behind bars for 30 months after pleading guilty to mailing over 60 threatening letters to LGBTQ+ affiliated individuals, organizations and businesses. The disturbing letters contained threats to kill, shoot and bomb the recipients. The case has garnered significant attention due to the severity of the threats and the long duration of the harassment.
The investigation, which spanned nearly eight years, was a collaborative effort between the FBI, Suffolk County Police Department and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. The authorities finally apprehended Fehring on November 18, 2021, during a search warrant at his Bayport residence. At the time, they recovered a stash of incriminating evidence, including letters containing threats, stolen LGBTQ+ Pride flags and reconnaissance-style photographs from an LGBTQ+ event.
Fehring’s crimes were committed between 2013 and 2021. During this period, he sent threatening letters to various individuals and organizations associated with the LGBTQ+ community. Some of the letters threatened violence at an LGBTQ+ event in Huntington, New York, similar to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Another letter threatened to plant radio-controlled explosives at a beach club in Long Beach, New York, which had hosted an LGBTQ+ event.
United States Attorney Breon Peace expressed his gratitude to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in the investigation. He also emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for hate crimes and ensuring the safety of the LGBTQ+ community.
Fehring’s sentence serves as a warning to those who engage in hate crimes and harassment. The case highlights the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies to prevent such crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.
