Oklahoma City Man Sentenced for Using Bogus Checks to Buy $41,000 in Postage Stamps
A 32-year-old Oklahoma City man has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for using bogus checks to buy over $41,000 in postage stamps.
ROBERT JORDAN CHILES, 32, of Oklahoma City, was sentenced by United States District Judge Stephen P. Friot on Yesterday to serve 30 months in federal prison for buying over $41,000 of postage stamps with checks backed by insufficient funds, announced Mark A. Yancey, United States Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma.
According to court documents, CHILES used checks drawn on bank accounts at USAA Federal Savings Bank, MidFirst Bank, and First United Bank to purchase $41,013.79 in United States postage stamps from various post offices in Oklahoma City in February and March 2016.
CHILES admitted to using checks backed by insufficient funds, which resulted in a loss of $41,013.79 to the United States Post Office. He also owes restitution to MidFirst Bank and First United Bank.
The United States Postal Inspection Service investigated the case, and it was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda Maxfield Green.
As part of his sentence, CHILES was ordered to pay restitution of $21,431.79 to the United States Post Office, $6,800.00 to MidFirst Bank, and $484.48 to First United Bank. He was also ordered to forfeit 40,000 postage stamps that were found in his possession.
CHILES’ sentence reflects the severity of his crime and the need to hold individuals accountable for their actions.
The case is a reminder that using bogus checks to obtain goods and services is a serious crime that can result in significant penalties.
