PENSACOLA, FLORIDA – A local man has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being caught with a firearm as a convicted felon.
Robert Lamar Gerald, 37, of Pensacola, received a 210-month prison sentence after pleading guilty in April 2016 to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The sentence was handed down by Christopher P. Canova, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.
The incident occurred in June 2015 when an Escambia County Sheriff’s Deputy stopped the vehicle Gerald was driving. After the stop, Gerald fled on foot and was apprehended after a brief chase. A search of his vehicle revealed a loaded 9 millimeter pistol.
The indictment lists 14 prior state felony convictions for Gerald. As a previously convicted felon, Gerald is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law. The enhanced sentencing as an Armed Career Criminal under federal law was due to his prior record including several violent felonies and drug offenses.
This case resulted from investigations by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, and the Gun Crime Response Team. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey M. Tharp.
