Robert Pugh, Leon Williams, Weapons Violations, Florida 2024

TAMPA, FL – Two Clearwater men are facing serious federal time after being indicted on weapons charges, authorities announced Tuesday. Robert Pugh, 34, and Leon Williams, 34, are accused of illegally possessing firearms and ammunition despite prior felony convictions, adding them to the growing list of repeat offenders flooding the federal system.

According to the indictment, Robert Pugh was caught on January 3, 2024, packing a loaded Taurus firearm and a loaded Sig Sauer. This isn’t Pugh’s first rodeo with the law; court records show he’s already served time for aggravated battery, prior felonious possession of a firearm or ammunition, and peddling cocaine. He now faces a maximum of 15 years in federal prison if convicted.

Leon Williams, also apprehended on January 3rd, was found with multiple rounds of ammunition. Williams’ record isn’t exactly clean either, with prior convictions for multiple counts of cocaine sales. But this time, the stakes are much higher. He’s facing a potential life sentence and a minimum mandatory 15-year stretch under the Armed Career Criminal Act – a harsh penalty designed for habitual offenders.

The case, investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) alongside the Clearwater Police Department, highlights the ongoing struggle to keep guns out of the hands of those legally prohibited from owning them. Assistant United States Attorney Jeff Chang is leading the prosecution, aiming to secure convictions that will keep these men off the streets.

Federal officials are framing this case as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN),” a broad initiative meant to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The program, launched in 2021, focuses on building trust, supporting community organizations, and strategic enforcement. Whether this strategy will actually make a dent in the cycle of violence remains to be seen.

An indictment is just a starting point, and both Pugh and Williams are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But with their extensive criminal histories and the serious nature of these charges, the odds are stacked against them. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the outcome. This is yet another example of the ongoing battle against illegal firearms and the consequences for those who choose to break the law.
