A devastating crash on a Rosebud, South Dakota highway ended in tragedy on August 25, 2020, when a man was killed by a vehicle driven by Robert Stands And Looks Back, a/k/a Robert Stands, Jr., age 45, of Rosebud, South Dakota.
The incident occurred on BIA Highway 1 south of Rosebud, where Stands And Looks Back was driving southbound when he crossed into the northbound lane, striking and killing a man who was lying in the roadway.
The Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services investigated the incident, which led to a federal indictment on October 14, 2020. Stands And Looks Back eventually pled guilty on June 29, 2021, to Involuntary Manslaughter.
In a federal courtroom, Judge Roberto A. Lange delivered a sentence of 16 months in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100 to Robert Stands And Looks Back on September 20, 2021.
The incident served as a tragic reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence, and the importance of prioritizing road safety.
Robert Stands And Looks Back was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson.
