Norwalk Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Tax Charge
A Norwalk man has pleaded guilty to a federal tax offense after using his business funds to pay for personal expenditures and falsifying records to hide the transactions.
Robert T. Colgan, 60, of Norwalk, made the admission in federal court today, as reported by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division. Colgan controlled Colgan Financial Group, Inc., a business that he directed to make payments for his personal expenses, which he then recorded as loans in the company’s books.
According to court documents, Colgan’s bookkeeper and return preparer were unaware of the transactions, which resulted in a tax loss of more than $250,000 for the years 2013 through 2017. Colgan’s personal income tax returns were underreported during this period.
As a result of the investigation, Colgan pleaded guilty to one count of filing a false tax return, an offense that carries a maximum term of imprisonment of three years. He is currently released pending sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ray Miller.
The investigation into Colgan’s actions was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division.
