Corpus Christi’s Roberto Omar Vera, 53, has been handed a 30-year federal prison sentence, marking the culmination of a massive investigation into a large-scale narcotic distribution conspiracy. The DOJ reported that Vera was the last of 23 defendants to face justice for their role in the drug ring.
Vera’s capture was an intense confrontation, involving a high-speed chase that reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour and resulted in multiple gunshots fired at law enforcement officials. After an hour-and-a-half standoff, authorities finally apprehended Vera, seizing firearms and illegal narcotics from his possession.
The syndicate’s activities were extensive, with the distribution of over 72 kilograms of methamphetamine, heroin, and other illegal substances targeting the Northern Dallas area. The group has been tied to 142 prior criminal convictions, including 52 drug-related charges and six violent offenses.
Other members of the conspiracy received sentences ranging from 33 to 360 months. Roberto Vera’s sentence is the second highest in the case, with a total of over 245 years imposed on the entire syndicate. The defendants included Elizabeth Causey-Eck (240 months), Daniel Moss (215 months), and John Owen (210 months), among others.
The joint investigation was led by the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney P.J. Meitl oversaw the prosecutions in the Northern District of Texas, ensuring that justice was served for this extensive drug trafficking operation.
