Red Lake Reservation Residents Handed Harsh Sentences for Child Neglect
MINNEAPOLIS — A trio of individuals living on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Minnesota has been dealt a harsh blow for their role in a shocking case of child neglect and endangerment.
Robin John Roy, 55, Nicole Robyn Roy, 29, and Harrison Edwin Dudley Sr., 36, willfully deprived minor victims of necessary food, health care, and supervision between February 2022 and January 2023, resulting in substantial harm to the children’s physical, mental, and emotional health.
According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, one of the minor victims suffered from severe anemia due to malnourishment and nearly lost their life as a result of the defendants’ collective failure to provide needed care. Prolonged lice infestations also led to life-threatening scalp infections for both children.
On February 16, 2024, following a six-day trial before U.S. District Judge Nancy E. Brasel, all three defendants were found guilty of felony child neglect. Nicole Roy and Dudley were also found guilty of felony child endangerment.
The defendants were sentenced on September 5, 2024, by Judge Brasel. Robin John Roy received 24 months of probation, Nicole Roy received 12 months and a day in prison followed by three years of supervised release, and Dudley received four months in prison.
During the sentencing, Judge Brasel emphasized that the neglect suffered by the children was ‘no less serious than an act of assault.’ She noted that the injuries were life-threatening, the neglect continued for a long time, and the caretakers failed to take relatively easy steps to address the children’s basic needs.
This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lindsey E. Middlecamp and Rachel L. Kraker prosecuted the case.
The defendants’ actions have left a lasting impact on the community and serve as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of child neglect.
