Rochester Man Behind Bars for Gun and Heroin Charges
A 30-year-old Rochester man has admitted to being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of heroin with intent to distribute. Walter Porter pleaded guilty to the charges before U.S. District Judge David G. Larimer on [undisclosed date].
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Noto, Porter was arrested on January 31, 2013 after law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at his residence. During the search, officers found a loaded 12 gauge shotgun and a quantity of heroin.
The defendant was previously convicted of a firearms felony in Monroe County Court in November 2002. This conviction makes him a prohibited possessor of firearms.
The plea is the culmination of an investigation on the part of Special Agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Brian R. Crowell, New York Field Division and members of the Greater Rochester Narcotics Enforcement Task Force (GRANET), under the direction of Lieutenant Gerald Smith.
Porter now faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the firearm charge. He also faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine for the drug trafficking charge. Sentencing is scheduled for August 1, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. before Judge Larimer.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. commented on the guilty plea, stating that Porter’s actions are a threat to the community. ‘This case is a clear example of the impact of gun violence and the scourge of heroin trafficking in our communities,’ Hochul said.
Porter’s guilty plea serves as a reminder that law enforcement will continue to crack down on individuals who engage in illicit activities. The Greater Rochester community can rest assured that those who break the law will face the consequences.
