ROCHESTER, NY – Akintunde Campbell, is dead after a confrontation with Rochester Police Department (RPD) officers on July 31, 2025. The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has launched a full probe into the shooting, standard procedure in cases involving potential police-caused deaths, according to a statement released today.
The incident unfolded around 7:37 p.m. on Ernestine Street. RPD officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man allegedly peering into homes and vehicles. Upon locating the individual – identified as Mr. Campbell – on the sidewalk, a “brief struggle” occurred, according to the AG’s office. Campbell then allegedly brandished what was later confirmed to be a black handgun.
Officers reportedly gave verbal commands for Campbell to drop the weapon, which he allegedly ignored. RPD officers then opened fire, striking Campbell. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was recovered by officers.
The Attorney General’s OSI, established under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, is mandated to investigate any incident where a law enforcement officer – including corrections officers – may have caused a person’s death, regardless of whether the officer was on or off-duty, or if the deceased was armed or in custody. This isn’t about covering for cops; it’s about accountability, and the law demands a thorough look.
“OSI assesses every incident reported to it…If OSI’s assessment indicates an officer may have caused the death, OSI proceeds to conduct a full investigation of the incident,” the AG’s statement reads.
