Rochester, NY – In a shocking case of tax evasion, Jorge O. Laurido, a 54-year-old tax preparer from Rochester, pleaded guilty to four counts of assisting in the preparation of false tax returns. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both.
According to U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr., Laurido prepared and filed false income tax returns for tax filers in Rochester from 2007 through 2010. The defendant falsely represented the taxpayers’ earned amounts of self-employment income, allowing Laurido’s clients to be eligible for larger Earned Income Credits.
As a result of the false tax returns, Laurido’s clients received larger refunds than they were entitled to. The Internal Revenue Service determined that the false tax returns prepared and filed by Laurido resulted in losses totaling $116,139.00.
The investigation into Laurido’s tax scam was conducted by Special Agents of the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent In Charge Toni Weirach.
Laurido’s plea is the culmination of the investigation, and he will face sentencing on December 5th, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. before U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Marisa J. Miller stated that the case against Laurido highlights the importance of tax compliance and the consequences of tax evasion. ‘This case demonstrates the IRS’s commitment to ensuring that tax preparers act with integrity and honesty,’ said Miller.
The sentencing of Laurido marks a significant victory for the IRS and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in their efforts to combat tax fraud and protect taxpayers.
