Defendant Sentenced for Stealing Packages Valued Over $5,000

BOSTON – In a shocking case of betrayal, a former employee of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has been sentenced for stealing packages he was entrusted to deliver.

35-year-old William J. Paige, of Duxbury, was found guilty of three counts of theft of mail matter by a Postal Service employee. According to court documents, Paige worked as a mail carrier in Whitinsville and between January and February 2022, he stole collector’s coins and other items from packages valued at over $5,000.

The shocking revelation came after an investigation by the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General. Paige’s crimes were revealed after he pleaded guilty in September 2024 to the three counts of theft.

U.S. District Court Judge Margaret R. Guzman handed down a lenient sentence, ordering Paige to serve two years’ probation. Paige was also ordered to pay $5,119 in restitution to the victims of his crimes.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristen M. Noto of the Worcester Branch Office. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Matthew Modafferi, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General, Northeast Area Field Office.
