ALBANY, NY – Roderick Jones, 43, is headed to federal prison for eight years after admitting to illegally possessing firearms despite a lengthy criminal history. The Albany man received a 96-month sentence for two separate incidents involving guns, a judge ruled this week.
The first incident occurred on January 17, 2019, when Jones crashed his vehicle into a building on Rensselaer Street while driving impaired. Cops discovered a loaded .380 caliber pistol tucked away inside the wreck. Just months later, on September 29, 2019, Jones escalated his recklessness, discharging a 9mm pistol four times at two homes within the Ida Yarbrough Homes housing complex in Albany.
Jones’s past caught up with him. Prior felony convictions for robbery disqualified him from legally owning any firearms in New York State. He’s now paying the price for ignoring that law, facing a substantial prison term and a three-year supervised release period after he gets out.
The case was a joint effort between the Albany Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). According to a statement released by U.S. Attorney Carla B. Freedman, the Albany County District Attorney’s Office also lent a hand in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dustin Segovia and Emmet O’Hanlon prosecuted the case.
Federal officials are framing Jones’s sentencing as a win for “Project Safe Neighborhoods,” a Department of Justice initiative aimed at curbing violent crime. The program focuses on targeting the most dangerous offenders and pairing enforcement with community-based prevention and reentry programs. While the feds tout the program’s success, the streets of Albany remain a proving ground for criminals like Jones.
Jones’s eight-year sentence sends a message, but whether it’s enough to deter others remains to be seen. The Grimy Times will continue to track the fallout from this case and monitor the ongoing efforts to combat gun violence in Albany and beyond. The incident highlights the revolving door of crime and the challenges faced by law enforcement in keeping illegal weapons off the streets.
