Felon Caught with Sawed-Off Shotgun Sentenced to 51 Months

In a shocking case of firearm possession and methamphetamine trafficking, Peter Rink, a 41-year-old LaPaz man, has been sentenced to 51 months in prison. Rink pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing a shotgun with a barrel of less than 18 inches in length.

The events leading up to Rink’s sentencing began when a vehicle driven by Rink was stopped by police, who were attempting to flee from law enforcement. Upon stopping the vehicle, police discovered a loaded 12-gauge shotgun with a sawed-off barrel and a loaded 9mm pistol.

According to court documents, Rink admitted to possessing the firearms despite having a prior felony conviction for aggravated assault in Arizona. The shotgun had a sawed-off barrel, which had been shortened by Rink himself, in violation of the National Firearms Act.

The shotgun and pistol were found in a backpack on the rear seat of the vehicle, along with methamphetamine, a scale, plastic baggies, and other drug paraphernalia. Rink’s actions have sparked concerns about firearm safety and the consequences of possessing illegal firearms.

U.S. Attorney Kirsch announced Rink’s sentencing, stating that the defendant’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law. Rink’s sentence includes 51 months of imprisonment followed by 3 years of supervised release.

This case was investigated by the ATF, with assistance from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Luke N. Reilander prosecuted the case.
