COLUMBUS, Ga. – A Columbus resident with a history of violent convictions has been sentenced to federal prison for gun possession charges.
Roderick Phillips, 27, was sentenced to serve 96 months in prison without parole, followed by three years of supervised release, for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Clay D. Land on Thursday, February 25. Phillips, a member of the Black Disciples street gang, was previously convicted of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in 2015, aggravated assault in 2019, and assault in the second degree in 2013.
According to court documents, Phillips was taken into custody by Columbus Police on October 13, 2020, after being found in possession of a stolen gun. During the arresting incident, officers also found rounds of ammunition in the car Phillips was traveling in, as well as a second stolen firearm.
Acting U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary stated, ‘A key component to reducing violence in Columbus is bringing gang members and felons with violent criminal histories who illegally possess guns to justice.’
Phillips’ sentence is part of a larger effort to reduce gun violence in Columbus, with federal and local law enforcement agencies working together to bring criminals to justice.
