Jefferson City Man Sentenced for Illegal Firearms Possession
A Jefferson City man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison without parole for illegally possessing firearms. Terrence Lamar Hawkins, 46, of Jefferson City, was found guilty of possessing two firearms despite having a prior felony conviction.
According to court documents, Hawkins was arrested twice by the Lincoln University Police in 2011 for being in possession of firearms. On February 24, 2011, Hawkins was arrested at the Lincoln University Scruggs Student Center cafeteria after a loaded Hi-Point .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol was found in his pocket. He attempted to flee when police officers approached him.
Four weeks later, on March 24, 2011, Hawkins was arrested again at the same location for trespassing. During a search, a loaded Hi-Point 9mm semi-automatic pistol was found in his pants pocket. Hawkins had a prior felony conviction for unlawful use of a weapon in Cole County, Missouri.
Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to possess any firearm or ammunition. Hawkins’ case was prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Lawrence E. Miller and investigated by the Lincoln University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Jefferson City Police Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Cole County Sheriff’s Department.
U.S. District Judge Brian C. Wimes sentenced Hawkins to five years in federal prison without parole. Hawkins was convicted at trial of two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Tammy Dickinson, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced Hawkins’ sentence, which serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of violating federal firearms laws.
