A Rochester man has been caught red-handed in a sting operation, attempting to steal a Target gift card from the mail he was transporting.
Rodney Dugan, 42, of Rochester, N.Y., pleaded guilty to obstructing the mails before U.S. Magistrate Judge Marian W. Payson, on an unspecified date.
According to authorities, Dugan worked as a driver for a carrier contracted by the United States Postal Service. On April 11, 2014, he was caught unlawfully removing a letter containing a Target gift card from the mail he was transporting that day.
The charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison, a fine of $5,000, or both.
The plea is the culmination of an investigation by Special Agents with the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Monica Weyler, Eastern Area Field Office, Philadelphia, PA.
Sentencing is scheduled for August 6, 2014, at 12:00 p.m. before Judge Payson.
Grimy Times has learned that Dugan’s actions have caused outrage among the community, with many calling for harsher penalties for those who would seek to exploit the postal system.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John J. Field, who is handling the case, stated that Dugan’s actions were a clear breach of trust, and that he will be held accountable for his crimes.
