East Haven Police Corruption Exposed
The East Haven Police Department in Connecticut has been accused of engaging in a pattern of unlawful discrimination against Latinos, using excessive force, and retaliating against those who witnessed police misconduct. The allegations were made by the U.S. government, which has proposed a settlement agreement aimed at reforming the department’s policies and practices.
Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. has outlined a plan to implement the proposed agreement, which includes broad institutional changes to the police department’s policies and practices. The agreement will be filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut for approval once fully executed by the town.
“We are pleased that Mayor Maturo has made a clear commitment to rebuild the East Haven Police Department by agreeing to enter into a court-enforceable agreement that will result in constitutional and effective policing for all persons who live, work and travel in East Haven,” said Thomas E. Perez, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division.
The proposed agreement provides for comprehensive reforms in seven core areas, including biased-free policing, use of force, searches and seizures, policies and training, civilian complaints, internal investigations and discipline, and community policing. A joint compliance expert will be appointed to independently assess the police department’s implementation of the agreement.
“There is no place for invidious discrimination by law enforcement officers, and today’s commitment from the mayor signals a new day for the East Haven Police Department,” said David B. Fein, the U.S. Attorney for the District Connecticut.
The proposed agreement is a significant step towards addressing the allegations of police misconduct in East Haven. The U.S. government has been investigating the police department since 2009, and the proposed settlement agreement is a result of that investigation.
The East Haven Police Department has a history of allegations of racism and excessive force. In 2009, the department was sued by several residents who alleged that they were subjected to racial profiling and excessive force by police officers.
The proposed agreement is a chance for the town of East Haven to rebuild trust with its community and to implement meaningful reforms to the police department’s policies and practices. The success of the agreement will depend on the town’s ability to implement the reforms and to hold police officers accountable for their actions.
