Today’s grim headlines from the federal courthouse in New Haven, Connecticut, feature Tyrick Thomas, a 35-year-old Hartford resident, who has pleaded guilty to trafficking fentanyl. The United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, David X. Sullivan, confirmed that Thomas was caught with a deadly cache of fentanyl and methamphetamine during an intense DEA raid.
On July 16, 2024, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Thomas’s Ashley Street residence, where they uncovered around 88 grams of a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine, fentanyl, and xylazine. The same day, a follow-up search of his vehicle yielded nearly 200 wax folds of fentanyl and xylazine, along with additional loose fentanyl.
Thomas’s guilty plea centers on possession with intent to distribute at least 40 grams of fentanyl—a charge that mandates a minimum sentence of five years, with a potential maximum of 40 years in federal prison. His sentencing date is set for October 22, 2024.
Since his arrest, Thomas has been detained without bail. The investigation leading to his capture was a collaborative effort by the DEA New Haven Task Force, which includes members from the ATF, New Haven Police Department, and various local police departments across Connecticut.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John T. Pierpont Jr. is handling the prosecution of Thomas’s case, part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). This initiative brings together all levels of law enforcement to combat gun violence and other violent crimes, aiming to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
