Gunfire and drugs go hand in hand on New Haven’s meanest streets — and Trea Fraser, 27, just admitted his role in the deadly equation. Fraser pleaded guilty yesterday in federal court to possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, capping a two-year investigation that exposed a steady flow of crack cocaine and heroin from his residence.
Fraser, of New Haven, waived indictment and entered his plea before U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford. The case, led by the FBI New Haven Safe Streets Gang Task Force and West Haven Police, began in 2020 with controlled buys of crack cocaine from Fraser and an associate. Surveillance and undercover operations tracked his movement from street sales to a full-scale narcotics operation.
Court records detail a February 9, 2021 raid that turned up hard evidence: crack cocaine and heroin stashed inside his home, along with ammunition and $3,900 in cash. A separate search of his vehicle revealed approximately 100 grams of cocaine and a loaded .45 caliber Glock 41 handgun — a weapon now linked to drug distribution, not self-defense.
The firearm charge carries a mandatory minimum of five years in federal prison, with a maximum sentence of life. Judge Shea has scheduled sentencing for February 11, 2022. Fraser has been locked up since his arrest on a federal criminal complaint on March 1, 2021 — no bond, no second chances.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Konstantin Lantsman is prosecuting the case, which falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the Justice Department’s flagship initiative targeting violent offenders. PSN marshals federal, state, and local forces to dismantle networks that fuel gun violence and drug addiction in urban communities.
Fraser’s guilty plea is a win for federal prosecutors, but the grim reality remains: for every stash house raided, another opens. With crack, heroin, and loaded guns still flooding city blocks, the grind for justice never stops.
