Rodney Joel Neal, Failure to Register as Sex Offender, Florida 2023

Jacksonville, Florida – In a shocking case of failure to register as a sex offender, a 53-year-old Georgia man has been indicted on federal charges. Rodney Joel Neal, of Montezuma, Georgia, has been accused of traveling from Georgia to Florida without registering as a sex offender, as required by law.

According to the indictment, Neal was found guilty in May 1988 of committing two serious crimes: aggravated child molestation and child molestation, both committed in Macon County, Georgia. This conviction led to Neal’s obligation to register as a sex offender in any state he traveled to.

However, Neal failed to register in Florida, sparking a federal investigation led by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the United States Marshals Service, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney D. Rodney Brown.

Neal has been in custody since his arrest on related state charges on October 10, 2014. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.

The charge against Neal is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. government to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children.

Neal’s indictment serves as a reminder of the importance of sex offender registration and the consequences of failing to comply with the law. As the U.S. government continues to crack down on sex crimes, cases like Neal’s highlight the need for vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
