Corey Kidd, Failing to Register as a Sex Offender, Rhode Island 2012

Kidd’s Downfall: Failing to Register as a Sex Offender

In a shocking turn of events, Corey Kidd, a 31-year-old Warwick native, has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). This severe punishment was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell, Jr. on a day that will be etched in the memories of law enforcement officials and the community.

Kidd, a level II sex offender, had been convicted in Rhode Island state court in November 2000 on a charge of third-degree sexual assault. His initial sentence consisted of five years imprisonment, suspended, with five years of probation and the requirement to register as a sex offender.

However, Kidd failed to notify the authorities of a change of address when he moved from his Warwick residence sometime prior to March 1, 2012. This egregious offense led to his arrest in Florida on May 31, 2012, on a federal arrest warrant issued by the U.S. District Court in Providence.

According to the U.S. Marshals and the Warwick Police Department, Kidd’s failure to comply with the sex offender registration requirements was a serious breach of trust. His actions not only put the community at risk but also demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law.

The case against Kidd was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard W. Rose, who emphasized the importance of adhering to the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. Under SORNA, registered sex offenders are required to register and keep their registration current in each jurisdiction in which they reside, work, or attend school, and to make periodic in-person appearances to verify and update their registration information.

Kidd’s sentence also includes five years of supervised release following his prison term. This harsh punishment serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of failing to comply with the law and the importance of maintaining public safety.
