GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: A 55-year-old Merrillville, Indiana, man has been sentenced to 180 months in prison for his involvement in a racketeering conspiracy with the notorious Sin City Deciples motorcycle gang.
According to the Second Superseding Indictment, Roger Lee Ervin Burton played a key role in the outlaw motorcycle organization, serving as a National Board Member and one of the top three leaders in the criminal organization.
The Sin City Deciples, originally formed in 1967 in Gary, Indiana, engaged in acts of violence, extortion, and narcotics distribution in the Northern District of Indiana and elsewhere.
Burton’s sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Philip P. Simon after pleading guilty to the racketeering conspiracy. He will also serve 2 years of supervised release following his prison term.
The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorneys David J. Nozick, Michael J. Toth, and former Assistant United States Attorney Kimberly L. Schultz. The case was part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation.
Law enforcement agencies involved in the prosecution include the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the East Chicago Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Gary Police Department, and several others.
The case was also part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through a multi-agency approach.
Burton’s sentencing brings an end to a long and complex investigation into the Sin City Deciples, which has been linked to various crimes in the region.
